The International Day of the Midwife is an annual celebration that honors the exceptional contributions of midwives worldwide. In Tanzania, this event was a platform to recognize the essential support, guidance, and care midwives provide to expectant mothers, ensuring safe deliveries and promoting maternal well-being. The event served as a reminder of the critical role midwives play in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, improving overall health outcomes, and fostering a healthier society.
The event was marked by various messages from distinguished leaders, including the Prime Minister, Hon. Kasim Majaliwa Majaliwa, and the Minister of Health, Hon. Ummy Mwalimu who both emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services. They highlighted the progress made in enhancing maternal and childcare, including the establishment of neonatal intensive care units and the construction and renovation of healthcare facilities. These improvements have directly benefited midwives, enabling them to provide better care for mothers and babies.
The Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundations (JMKF’s) participation in the event was a significant highlight. Representing the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation, Dr. Catherine Sanga acknowledged the critical contributions of midwives in ensuring safe births and the health of mothers and babies and focused emphasizing the multifaceted challenges midwives face, including those posed by climate change. JMKF’s commitment to supporting midwives and strengthening health systems is pivotal in ensuring that maternal and child health services remain accessible and effective.
