In-Service Teacher Training Program

Equipping Teachers with 21st Century Skills

JMKF, in partnership with TeachUNITED and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT), launched an in-service science teacher training program to equip secondary school teachers in Zanzibar with modern pedagogical skills, digital tools, and student-centered teaching methodologies aligned to Tanzania’s new competency-based curriculum.

Background

With the introduction of a new national curriculum in 2024, the Tanzanian education system is undergoing a transformation. However, only 31% of secondary science teachers in Zanzibar have a relevant science background, and many lack digital literacy and engagement techniques to bring classrooms into the 21st century. This training program addresses the gaps left by legacy systems and decentralization reforms.

Problems

– Low science teacher qualification and limited digital capacity.

– Passive classroom environments with low student engagement.

– Poor use of data and digital tools in teaching.

Solutions

Through a hybrid model of in-person coaching, webinars, and school-based mentorship, the program trained 50 teachers over 4 months. It focused on:

– Growth Mindset & Student Engagement

– Technology Integration (e.g., Google Classroom)

– Data-Driven Instruction

– Inquiry-based and Collaborative Learning

Key Achievements

1. 100% training completion among 50 teachers.

2. Immediate classroom impact, including weekend digital lessons

3. MoEVT endorsement and request for scale-up to Pemba

4. Teacher-led mentorship and peer-to-peer learning initiated

Next Steps

– Conduct post-training evaluation in March 2025

– Scale program across Zanzibar

– Integrate CPD and digital tools into MoEVT teacher programs

– Expand mentorship through local training colleges
