“BahariMania” (Ocean Mania), an exciting new animation series created by TAI+ Company, is capturing attention with its powerful environmental message. This innovative project, initiated and co-developed by the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation (JMKF) and TET Foundation, showcases the critical need for action against plastic pollution in Tanzania.
Plastic waste has become a significant issue, particularly in urban areas and along Tanzania’s bustling coastlines, where tourism thrives. Only 40% of the country’s plastic waste is collected, and an alarming 4% is recycled, leading to widespread environmental damage, especially in marine ecosystems.
A 2018 report reveals that Tanzania generated around 315,000 tons of plastic waste, with 29,000 tons leaking into water bodies. This plastic pollution threatens marine life through entanglement, ingestion of microplastics, and the destruction of natural habitats. Despite a partial ban on single-use plastic bags in 2019, the problem persists, demanding more comprehensive solutions.
“BahariMania” aims to inspire real change by combining engaging storytelling with vivid animation. The series follows Anzi Makini, a marine scientist torn between her love for the ocean and her family’s fishing business. Anzi discovers she can communicate with mutated marine creatures living in polluted waters, leading to an adventure that highlights the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.
Through its imaginative plot, “BahariMania” seeks to raise awareness and encourage viewers to take meaningful steps toward protecting Tanzania’s oceans and marine life. Together, we can amplify the message of BahariMania and make tangible strides towards a cleaner, brighter future.
