Former President of Tanzania, Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, has chaired high-level consultations with various South Sudan opposition groups in Dar es Salaam as part of renewed efforts to advance inclusive peace and political stability in the world’s youngest nation. 

The meetings, held on 21 and 22 May 2026, brought together representatives from several opposition movements to review progress on the implementation of the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement ahead of South Sudan’s anticipated General Election later this year. 

Dr Kikwete led the discussions in his capacity as the African Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, a role that focuses on preventive diplomacy, conflict mediation and promoting regional peace and security.

He also works closely with regional organisations, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC), to strengthen cooperation in addressing political and security challenges. 

The consultations demonstrated the African Union’s continued commitment to supporting dialogue among South Sudanese stakeholders while providing a clearer assessment of the country’s political and security situation before the planned elections.
